about

October 10, 2019 – World Mental Health Day – Toronto-born hip hop emcee MC FÜBB has released his long-awaited EP: Wounded Healer.

Coming off the success of his recent singles “Opioid Crisis,” “Dear Doctor,” and “Black Dog,” MC FÜBB (pronounced “emcee foob”) is proud to announce Wounded Healer: an album synthesizing his dual passions for hip hop music and bringing a humanistic, authentic lens to conversations about mental health. In collaboration with hip hop producer and beatmaker Execute (with a bonus track from Juno-nominated producer Fresh Kils), Wounded Healer is a sonic delve deep into the psyche of an artist who has both lived and grown through mental health challenges.

Borrowing the album title from the famous Carl Jung quote (which itself draws from Greek mythology), FÜBB found resonance both as a survivor of mental health and addiction challenges, and as a current provider of mental healthcare (he also works as a Registered Psychotherapist). The EP touches on the topics of depression, the limitations of the medical model in mental healthcare, perfectionism, and addiction, while conveying themes of resilience, hope, and determination. The album cover depicts an image of FÜBB’s own arm, flexed to represent strength, with scars visible that represent the struggles of his past. A quote from FÜBB’s social media accounts:

“Wounded Healer is by far the most personally vulnerable album I've made to date. The choice I made to open myself up at this level through hip hop music and to share it with the world was at first not an easy one. All of the usual suspects showed up in my mind: "what will people think? what about stigma? are you revealing too much? what if, what if, what if..." Choosing not to listen to those doubts and instead choosing to be vulnerable took courage, but once I made that choice, I was somehow less afraid. In the process of creating Wounded Healer, I realized that all I had to lose was another layer of insecurity, and what I had to gain was a greater ability to face the world openly, without needing to protect myself from potential judgments, and to do it in a way that might just help others who take the time to listen.”

Wounded Healer, a project partially funded by the Ontario Arts Council, is MC FÜBB’s 6th official studio release (not counting mixtapes, singles, collaborations, and features) since 2009.
